Allergan recognizes the important role fellows play in contributing to ophthalmology
research and development. The Allergan Horizon Grant Program provides multiple awards
to academic medical institutions to support fellows seeking careers in academic
medicine.
How are grants awarded? back to top
Allergan Horizon Grants will be awarded to institution fellowship programs. These
awards will fund fellowship programs that conduct clinical research in the diagnosis
or pharmacological treatment of glaucoma, corneal, and retinal diseases.
Who can apply for a Horizon Grant? back to top
The department chairs, division chiefs, or fellowship directors of academic medical
institutions who would like support to train ophthalmic fellows in glaucoma, corneal,
and retinal diseases can apply for an Allergan Horizon Grant. Each department
may submit only one application.

Applications must be submitted to Allergan Medical Affairs no later than Friday,
June 25, 2010.
What is required for the application? back to top
The Allergan Horizon Grant Program application must be submitted by the department
chairs, division chiefs, or fellowship directors of the academic institutions. Applicants
will be required to provide information about their institution and fellowship program,
provide historical information about past clinical fellows from your institution,
list research programs/projects currently ongoing in which an existing fellow is
participating, and describe specific research programs/projects the Allergan Horizon Grant
fellow will be conducting in the coming year. The institution will be required
to cite the research conducted (and if applicable, published) in the specific therapeutic
area within the past 5 years. We will also ask for a listing of recent fellows (within
the past 5 years) from the institution who have pursued careers as clinician scientists
in academic medicine.

How is the application submitted? back to top
Applications must be submitted to Allergan Medical Affairs no later than Friday,
June 25, 2010. The
application should be e-mailed to HorizonGrantsApplications@allergan.com. Allergan is unable
to accept applications in any other format.
What are the application restrictions? back to top
Applicants cannot have a familial relationship to a member of the Academic Advisory
Board. Educational grants are subject to objective evaluation and are awarded to
a limited number of applicants. Funding is not available for research conducted
outside the United States. Research must be conducted by a US-based clinical fellow
in an academic setting.
How is the application evaluated and awarded? back to top
Grant applications will be reviewed by the Horizon Academic Advisory Board, an independent
advisory board made up of experts in the fields of glaucoma, cornea, and retina,
with the assistance of the Allergan Grant Review Committee. Applications will be
reviewed based on the strength of the fellowship program, the clinical and research
plan for the institution’s fellow, how the grant funds will be used, and activities
the fellow will be engaged in while in the program. Grants will only be awarded
to fellowship programs that conduct clinical research in the diagnosis or pharmacological
treatment of glaucoma, corneal, and retinal diseases. Horizon Academic Advisory
Board members do not participate in the evaluation of applications from their own
institutions.

Allergan Horizon Grants will be distributed to the institution during the summer.
How can the grant funds be used? back to top
The Allergan Horizon Grant is intended primarily for salary and research support
for fellows and not for overhead, indirect, or fringe costs. Research must be conducted
by a US-based clinical fellow in an academic setting. Grant funds must be used by
June 30, 2011.
What is required of a grant recipient? back to top
Programs receiving a Horizon Grant will be asked to appoint an “Allergan Horizon
Grant Fellow.” This fellow will be required to reference this title when presenting
or publishing work conducted during the award year.
